Thirty nine works from artists from Ireland, UK, the US and mainland Europe feature in this year’s exhibition, and were selected from over 1,200 entries from painters at all stages in their practice.
Originating in the UK, organised by painters for painters since 2006, the Marmite Prize for Painting is the only erratic, challenging and nomadic biennial open submission painting exhibition existing to promote excellence in contemporary painting. The Prize is entered into by the artists in the spirit of participation, and for the thrill of the exhibition. The ‘Marmite’ itself refers to the Old English term for a cooking pot, alluding to the mixing of diverse practices encouraged by the Prize, and also to the prize itself – a specially made interpretation of a ‘marmite’ which is donated by an artist.
The Marmite V exhibition features works by Albane Lamoril, Richard Baker, Sarah Ball, Anthony Banks, Juan Bolivar, Philip Booth, Eleanor Breeze, Hannah Brown, Jo Bruton, Michael Calver, Diane Chappalley, Emma Cousin, Billy Crosby, Chris Daniels, Amanda Doran, Tamara Dubnyckyj, Steven Gee, Max Gomes, John Greenwood, Mandy Hudson, Clare Jarrett, Sooim Jeong, Michael Johnson, Jessie Makinson, Lindsay Mapes, Kathryn Maple, José Batista Marques, Jo McGonigal, Sinéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Oliver Mulvihill, Helen O’Leary, Bernadette O’Toole, Selma Parlour, Alison Pilkington, Christiane Pooley, Sheila Rennick, Joan Sugrue, Suzy Willey, and Daniel Woolhouse.

Max was featured in SELECT magazine, prestigious print art magazine in Brazil, with his series “Internet Meme” that was displayed at (e)merge art in Washington, DC a colective exhibition.

Honourable mention in Rio de Janeiro’s Art Prize

A 4ª edição do Prêmio Belvedere (Paraty), uma iniciativa do ativista cultural e galerista Cesare Pergola, premiou a carioca Mayra Martins Redin (obra “Rio”). Mayra ganhou uma viagem a Florença, passagem aérea e hospedagem por dez dias.
Também foram lembrados com menção honrosa Cecilia Walton (SP), Max Gomes (SP) e Victor Leguy (SP). O júri foi formado por Paula Alzugaray (editora da revista Select), Cauê Alves (curador e professor da PUC-SP), Marcus Lontra Costa (curador), Flaviana Bernardo (diretora da Galeria Emma Thomas) e Patrícia Sada (representante dos artistas de Paraty).

Fotógrafo brasileiro é um dos destaques da (E)merge Art Fair
Teve início ontem em Washington D.C., capital federal dos Estados Unidos, a terceira edição da (E)merge Art Fair. O evento será realizado no Capitol Skyline Hotel até domingo, 06/10.
Idealizada por Leigh Conner e Jamie Smith, da CONNERSMITH Gallery, também sediada em Washington, a feira aproxima artistas de curadores, novos colecionadores e formadores de opinião, em um cenário cultural dos mais efervescentes para as artes visuais, visto que a região onde o evento é realizado acolhe uma população jovem, de alto poder aquisitivo e altamente qualificada, fatores que beneficiam tanto o colecionismo quanto a projeção de artistas emergentes.
A feira conta com 80 expositores, a maioria deles importantes galerias comerciais dos Estados Unidos e da Europa. Um grande diferencial da (E)merge Art Fair é que ela também acolhe artistas sem representação, que podem expor suas obras sem custo.
Um dos destaques da feira é o fotógrafo paulistano Max Gomes. Ele está presente com diversos trabalhos da série Inernet MEME. Fenômeno recente, os memes tornaram-se febre na internet com o advento das redes sociais. São imagens compostas de fotos ou ilustrações, acrescidas de frases sintéticas, que multiplicam-se de forma viral e são vistas às centenas, diariamente, na linha de tempo de redes como o Facebook (daí a associação com o conceito da memética, criado pelo zoólogo Richard Dawkins no livro O Gene Egoísta, no qual ele defende que as ideias tem vida própria e reproduzem-se como um material genético que “infecta” o maior número possível de cérebros humanos).
